The Problem
The Challenge.
Many finance apps assume a constant connection and a cloud account. That leaves people with patchy internet, or people who simply don't want their spending history on someone else's server, choosing between convenience and control. Their records also sit behind an outage or a sync bug.
TrackWise wanted the opposite: a finance app where everyday tracking, budgets and reports work entirely on the device, with cloud sync as an option rather than a requirement. Because it holds years of personal records, data loss was the main risk to design against.
The challenge was keeping that engineering invisible. The app still had to feel quick and simple for someone logging a coffee purchase, not like a database tool.
Our Strategy
Our Approach.
We treated the phone as the source of truth. All core data lives in a local Hive database, so every main feature works with no connection at all.
Then we designed for failure. Backup files are AES-256 encrypted, and local backups run automatically. If the local database is damaged, the app works through staged recovery: it tries to restore from backup first and only rebuilds the database as a last resort. Users can export everything to CSV whenever they want.
Cloud features are opt-in. Google sign-in and Supabase sync can be switched on, and deletions made offline are queued and synced once the device reconnects.

TrackWise covers daily tracking, budgets and reporting in one app that never needs a connection.
Users log income and expenses with categories, subcategories, notes and payment methods. Monthly budgets show progress as money is spent, and budget history compares what was planned with what actually went out.
Interactive charts break spending down by week, month, quarter or a custom range. PDF reports bring together summaries, category breakdowns, trends, daily averages and full transaction lists, ready to print or share with a partner or accountant.
The interface was designed in Figma by the same team. It supports 50+ currencies, 35+ accent themes, light and dark modes and daily reminders to log expenses, plus 188+ ready-made subcategories so new users can start logging without any setup.

Fully Offline Core
Tracking, budgets, charts and PDF reports all run on the device. No feature in the core workflow needs a connection.
Encrypted, Automatic Backups
Backup files are AES-256 encrypted, and automatic local backups protect years of records against app or database failures.
Self-Healing Database Recovery
If local data is corrupted, the app restores from backup first and rebuilds the database only as a controlled last resort.
Optional Cloud Sync
Google sign-in and Supabase sync are opt-in. Offline deletions queue locally and sync on reconnect, keeping cloud and device records consistent.
